How to talk to your kids about divorce

Divorce can be difficult to deal with, no matter who you are. Whether your marriage was long or short, getting a divorce can take a big toll on your emotions.

This can be especially true if you have children. The upside is, though, that there are ways that you can more easily broach the subject with them.

Be honest but selective

Telling your children about a divorce can be difficult. It is a weighty subject, and might not feel easy. Even though it is not easy, it is important for you to be honest with your children about the divorce and some of the reasons behind it. That said, you do not need to tell your children every detail or speak about your soon-to-be ex-spouse in a negative light. Doing so can often make the divorce process more difficult for them.

Make space for their emotions

Along with being open and honest with your children about what is going on, you also need to make some time and space for their feelings. Your children may have many different feelings about what is going on, and they will likely need extra support as they work through all of the emotions that they experience. By letting them know their thoughts and feelings are important you can help reduce some of their stress.

Divorce is often difficult, especially when you share children. While it may be a tough road at times, there can be simple ways to look out for your children and make the process a little easier for them.
